ROCKFORD — At age 24, Skylar Davis had to sell records from his personal collection in order to keep his store going. Sixteen years later, Culture Shock is bigger than Davis ever envisioned.

“I’m in this for the long haul, this is what I do and what I want to do,” Davis said Friday in an interview with the B103 Morning Routine. “I just didn’t know how much it would change, and how much of like this local icon we would be and how big and how rooted the store would get.”

To celebrate, Culture Shock is throwing an anniversary party from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at the store, 2239 Charles St.

In addition to its big party, it’s also Record Store Day.

“They’re calling it a drop because there were three dozen different records limited releases that weren’t ready in time so they’re getting released tomorrow,” Davis said. “And we already planned on June 18 doing our 16-year anniversary party also, so it’s kind of doubled down.”

Those limited record releases will be available when the store opens, and it is first-come first-served.

Culture Shock will also have buy one, get one half price deals on used records and T-shirts. Lunch, free food and drinks, and live music from Andrew Robinson all kick off at noon.

“It’s kind of like a tailgating, fun hang out with your music friends and wait to get those records,” Davis said as he showed off some of his favorite picked records.

Culture Shock is known for used records, T-shirts, gifts and local merchandise.
