Nature Sprouts

February 10, 2020 @ 9:30 am - 11:30 am

|Recurring Event (See all)

Severson Dells believe that nature is the best teacher and that when one develops a deeper understanding of nature they develop as a person. Join Naturalist/Educator Andrea Wallace for a morning packed with exciting and intentional activities centered around a different environmental theme each month. You will read picture books that introduce ecological concepts, make nature-themed crafts that utilize fine-motor and creative thinking skills, observe and interact with our natural environment, and of course, have a lot of fun! You’ll explore the great outdoors, so come dressed for the weather.

This program is intended for children aged 3-6 years and a guardian to accompany them.

September 10 – Treeriffic Trees
Learn all about the trees around us! We will read from “Tree: A Peek-Through Picture Book,” do sensory exploration with bark rubbings, and work on fine-motor skills by making tube necklaces from invasive tree species.

October 8 – Awesome Autumn
Celebrate one of the best times of the year with us! We will learn more about this season by reading from “A is for Autumn,” explore by collecting leaves, practice science skills by learning how to press leaves, and use our creativity to make leaf animals.

November 12 – Spectacular Squirrels
Go nuts for squirrels with us! We will look into the lives of our furry friends by reading “The Busy Little Squirrel,” practice observation and counting skills by going on a Squirrel Hike, and make a squirrel puppet to take home!

December 10 – Wonderful Winter Animals
Lots of animals stay here in the winter! We will read about winter animals and habitats in “Over and Under the Snow,” go on a walk to look for their tracks in the snow, and use gross motor skills to make a bird-feeder garland for our feathered winter friends.

January 7 – Splendid Snow
Snowflakes surround us this time of year! We will learn about how the cold weather transforms forests by reading “Best in Snow,” use our creativity and gross motor skills to paint and shape snow, inspect snow on a smaller scale with magnifying tools, and practice fine motor skills by making paper snowflakes.

February 11 – Remarkable Rocks
Every rock tells a story, and we are going to learn about the stories the rocks at Severson Dells can tell! We will learn about rocks and rock collecting in “If you Find a Rock,” make our very own rock collecting boxes and go on a special journey down to the dells to meet rocks with 450 million years of stories.

March 10 – Marvelous Mud
Mud is truly a treasure to behold! We will learn about this squishy substance in “Squish! A Wetland Walk,” meet some of the creatures that live in our pond muck, and use our creativity and fine motor skills to make mudpies.

April 7 – Compassionate Conservation
For Earth Month, we will engage with a timeless tale of conservation: “The Lorax.” We will use fine motor skills to craft our very own truffula trees to serve as reminders for this important lesson, then make a positive difference of our own by making native seed bombs to plant at Severson Dells and to take home.

May 12 – Beautiful Birds
May is peak migration season for several bird species at Severson Dells. We will learn more about backyard birds in “Our Yard Full of Birds,” sing bird songs and go on a hike to hear them, and make our very own bird feeders to bring the message home.
