BELVIDERE — The Belvidere Police Department will conduct a squad car procession today to honor the life of longtime officer Howard Pearson, who has died at age 83.

Pearson was a Belvidere native who enlisted in the U.S. Air Force after graduating Belvidere High School. He served in the Air Force from 1959 to 1967 before returning to Belvidere.

He joined the city’s police department in 1970 and served for 25 years. After retiring in 1995, he spent many years working at Just Tires. He also taught swim classes and self-defense courses at the YMCA in Belvidere.

Pearson died Jan. 2 in hospice care.

A visitation for Pearson will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at Anderson Funeral Home, 218 W. Hurlbut Ave. A memorial service will follow at noon.

After the service, a police procession will travel to American Legion Post No. 77, 900 W. Chrysler Drive. Pearson was a regular at the American Legion.

The procession, which is expected to begin around 1 p.m., will move from Anderson Funeral Home down Hurlbut Avenue to Lincoln Street, then to North Appleton Road and West Chrysler Drive.
