ROCKFORD — Gas prices across the city have fallen for a second straight week after eight consecutive weeks of increases.

The average price of a gallon of gas dropped nearly 6 cents per gallon over the past week to $5.18 today, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 139 stations in Rockford.

Prices in the city are more than 30 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand $2.05 more than this time a year ago. According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Rockford sold fuel at $4.84 per gallon Sunday while the most expensive was $5.39, a difference of 55 cents per gallon.

Nationally, the average cost of fuel has also declined, dropping nearly 9 cents per gallon to $4.88 today.

“With Independence Day a week away, gas prices have continued to fall for the second straight week as the price of oil has faltered, ushering in the drop we’re seeing,” Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy, said in a news release. “The good news is we could also see a third straight week of decline.”

The national average is up 28 cents per gallon from a month ago and $1.79 per gallon higher than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data from more than 150,000 gas stations across the country.

“While prices will be at their highest July 4th level ever, they’ll have fallen close to 20 cents since our peak in early June,” De Haan said. “Motorists should be wary that while the decline could continue for the week ahead, any sudden jolts to supply could quickly cause a turnaround, and risk remains that when the peak of hurricane season arrives, we could see a super spike at the pump.”
