Illinois best thrill park has chosen to delay it’s opening day in response to the Coronavirus pandemic.

In a press released to us Six Flags Great America has informed us:

“Six Flags Great America has temporarily suspended operations and will open in mid-May, or as soon as possible thereafter.

A follow-up call was placed regarding if, and how, the delay would affect Hurricane Harbor in Rockford (formerly Magic Waters) and, as of right now, the delay has no impact on Six Flags’s plans for the water park, but could change as the situation develops.

While there have been no reported cases of COVID-19 at the property, the safety of our guests and team members is always our highest priority. We will continue to closely monitor this evolving situation, and follow the most current guidance from federal, state, and local officials.”

If your a season pass holder or belong to their membership program this news also affects your passes…but in a positive way!

For guests with prepaid tickets, the valid dates have been extended to the end of the 2020 season. For current 2020 Season Pass Holders, passes will be extended for the number of operating days the park is temporarily closed. Six Flags Great America Members will receive one additional month for each month that the park is closed, plus a free Membership level upgrade for the rest of the 2020 Season (and/or other bonus benefits, as applicable).

While it obviously is uncool to lose access to roller coasters and other rides; given the nature of the pandemic and the response required to flatten the curve (i.e. social distancing), this is a very cool and absolutely required move. And the fact that they are extending tickets, passes, and benefits is something that they didn’t have to do. So big thanks to Six Flags for being responsible when it comes to guest safety and satisfaction.
