ROCKFORD — Students from Jefferson High School will compete in the Poetry Out Loud competition at 4 p.m. today.

The first and second place winners will advance to Illinois’ State Poetry Out Loud Competition. 

The state champion advances to the Poetry Out Loud National Finals held virtually May 1 and June 5, where financial awards and school stipends will be distributed.

The competition, presented by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation in partnership with the Illinois Arts Council Agency, is part of a national  program that encourages high school students to learn about poetry through memorization, performance and competition.

Not only will students from Jefferson High School participate in this competition but also city of Rockford Poet Laureate Christine Swanberg will speak. Dorothy Paige-Turner, Erin Nash and Zack Shereck will be judges, and The Arts Council’s Program Coordinator Kayla Acton will emcee.
